Uncomfirmed: Some people report that he was an arsonist as a teenager, and sexually abused animals, including dogs and horses, in Nevada and California.
Even after being arrested and convicted multiple times for his crimes, he keeps on going after horses. Here's a timeline that shows just how persistent he is:
Rachwal was convicted of mistreatment of animals in 1983 and 1984 in Waupaca County, and in Outagamie County in 1988.
In December 1993, Rachwal plead no contest to charges of mistreatment of animals causing death, sexual gratification with an animal, and intentional mistreatment of animals in Monroe County. Rachwal appealed his sentence, and was partially successful. He was released on bail in 1995. It didn't take him long to go back to raping horses.
In June of 1996, Rachwal was charged with two counts of burglary, mistreatment of animals, criminal damage to property, and felony bail jumping. In May of 1997, he was found not guilty by reason of mental defect, and sent to Mendota Mental Institution.
In 2008, Sterling Rachwal was released from Mendota and almost immediately went after another horse in Fon du Lac. He was thrown back into custody, and they managed to hold him until 2012, when they finally convicted him and gave him 90 days.
Rachwal petitioned for, and got, another release hearing April 23rd 2014. At that time, the judge stated that he would not release Rachwal, but would have to do so one year later.
Rachwal was released June 28th, 2015.
On November 28th, 2015, a pregnant was brutally attacked near New London, WI (near where the Rachwal family farm is located). The mare was raped with "objects" and found bleeding in her pasture. Police could not confirm Rachwal was the one who did the deed, so he was not jailed. The mare and her unborn foal later died.
In April 2017, Sterling Rachwal molested a horse in Eaton, near Green Bay.
In May 2017, he raped a gelding at a ranch in Maribel, also near Green Bay.
This is devastating, and utterly incomprehensible.
Serial horse rapist and torturer Sterling Rachwal is going to get a sweet deal from WI prosecutors.
Originally, Rachwal was charged with five crimes:
Three misdemeanors in Brown County:
Intentionally Mistreating Animals (raping a gelding)
Resisting or Obstructing an Officer
...and two misdemeanors in Manitowoc County:
Intentionally Mistreating Animals (raping a different gelding)
Now, Rachwal will plead guilty to just ONE misdemeanor charge of Intentionally Mistreating Animals. He will likely get either no jail time, or less than one year of jail time, plus some fines. This means that by Christmas time next year at the very latest, he will be free again-- and he WILL re-offend.
This deal is a slap in the face to all Wisconsin horse owners. This deal says, "we don't care if Sterling Rachwal rapes and mutilates your horses."
Prosecutors could have gone ahead with a jury trial. They have video evidence of him raping a horse, tracking data from a police gps unit planted in his vehicle, physical evidence from the geldings which were brutally raped, and Rachwal's THIRTY YEAR history of raping and mutilating animals. A jury could sent him to prison for several years based on this evidence-- or perhaps Rachwal would have been forced to plead insanity again and might have wound up back in Mendota Mental Institute indefinitely.
Instead, WI officials Jill Vendetti and Dana Johnson decided to drop most of the charges and offer Rachwal a slap on the wrist as punishment. Rachwal is currently still in jail. He will be formally sentenced in January 2018, but we already know the outcome: He'll be raping and torturing horses again very, very soon.
Are you pissed? Contact the people soon to be responsible for putting Rachwal on the street again. Tell them that next time (and there WILL be a next time, because Rachwal never stops), they had better actually try to protect Wisconsin horses. And who knows, maybe it's not too late for them to change their mind on those charges.

I will be alerting you all closer to Rachwal's sentencing date, so that hopefully you can physically be there in the court room to make your voice heard.

Rachwal Family: Unfortunately, Sterling Rachwal has a twin brother, and possibly one other brother, so appearance alone may not help you identify him. Sources close to the Rachwal family say that the brothers look fairly different now that they have aged, but make no assumptions about his identity. Sterling Rachwal's family are innocent citizens and should not be harassed in any way. At least one of his family members is terrified of him and wants nothing to do with him. Repeat: this family cannot help being related to a monster.
Other Possible Identifiers: Rachwal is interested in working on trucks. Rachwal has terrible spelling in written communications. He may actively search for free or cheap horses via Craigslist. You can see his Facebook page here.
Locked gates, security cameras, alarm systems, and guard dogs are good ideas if this psycho is ever releaesd again. He WILL reoffend.
